Shoulder Treatment And Surgery

If you’ve noticed stiffness, frailty, instability, or long-lasting pain in your shoulders, it’s best to consult a physician. Shoulder injuries can be treated with physiotherapy, but if the injury is severe and the treatment is unsuccessful, the physician will recommend surgery.

Orthopedic surgeons can help patients decide whether the injury could be treated with non-surgical procedures, or if surgery is required.

Our shoulders are the most complex joints in our bodies. They’re made up of 3 main parts, the humerus (our upper arm bone), the scapula (our shoulder blade), and the clavicle (our collarbone). Because of these bones, our shoulders have more range of motion than any other joint in our body.

Causes Of Shoulder Pain

Shoulder pain could be the result of muscular injuries, arthritis in the shoulder joints, and sports injuries due to high-intensity repetitive motions.

Orthopedists that specialize in shoulder conditions can treat issues like inflammation in the joints, arthritis, dislocations, fractures, shoulder impingement, and cartilage deterioration.

Devising a treatment plan for your shoulder involves diagnosing the problem correctly. Your doctor will use multiple imaging methods and in-office examinations to determine the location of the pain and narrow down the source.

Imaging techniques can include:

  • X-rays
  • CT scans
  • Ultrasound
  • MRIs

Non-Intrusive Treatments For Shoulder Injuries Include:

  • Physical therapy
  • Anti-inflammation medication administered by injection
  • Changes in lifestyle

Types Of Shoulder Surgery

A physician may suggest the following kinds of shoulder surgeries:

  • Shoulder Arthroscopy: This is carried out to remove bone spurs and mend the tissue inside and near the shoulder to alleviate pain.
  • Partial or Total Replacement/Revision Surgery: In these surgeries, the shoulder joint is replaced.
  • Rotator cuff surgery: This is performed to fix tears in the rotator cuff tendon. The tendon connects all the muscles so your shoulder can rotate freely.
  • Special kinds of shoulder surgery for complex cases: Other kinds of surgeries that may be needed in special cases.

The repetitive motions of sports like golf and tennis can cause inflammation in your elbows leading to intense pain and limit the range of motion if left untreated.

If you do happen to injure your elbow while playing sports or during a fall, you can try limiting movement, using pain-relief gels or creams, anti-inflammatory medication, or physical therapy. A doctor will help you determine what treatment plan is most suitable for you.

In case these treatments are unsuccessful, your physician will recommend more complex treatments, including the following:

  • Steroid Injections: Hormones will be injected on the inflamed part of your elbow to provide pain relief.
  • Platelet-rich plasma treatment (PRP). This is the process of taking blood from a different part of your body, extracting the platelets, and injecting it into the inflamed portion of the elbow.
  • Surgery
    • Minimally invasive orthoscopic surgery
    • Open procedures

Your medical will use X-rays and ultrasound imaging to determine the source of the problem before recommending a treatment plan.
