Femoral Neck Surgery | PAIN AND RECOVERY

Injuries in the femoral neck are more common in old age.

Read on to learn about femoral neck fractures, their characteristics, and surgical treatment.

Bone Weakness as You Age

Our bones become weak as we age. They experience the loss of muscle strength, difficulty in maintaining balance, the loss of visual acuity, and the regular use of medications to reduce blood pressure in the central nervous system, causing elderly people to fall more frequently.

The Two Factors That Cause Femoral Neck Fractures

Femoral neck fractures are caused by weak bones and trauma to the hip region; both are common in elders.

On the Hip and the Femur Collar

The femur is a large and robust bone; in fact, it’s the largest in our skeleton and has great strength. Located in the thigh area, it connects at the lower end of the pelvis and proximal to the leg.

Divisions At The Top

The upper part of the femur has three divisions, the head of the femur, the neck of the femur, and the trochanters.

The Acetabulum

The acetabulum is the region located in the pelvis bone in which the head of the femur fits.

The area that encompasses the upper part of the femur and the side of the pelvis is called the hip; the junction between the acetabulum and the head of the femur is called the hip joint.

The diagnosis involves the patient’s history, symptoms, the report of the fall, and then the examination. The lower limb is usually shortened and rotated externally. X-rays reveal where the fracture took place.

When X-Rays Aren’t Enough

When X-rays aren’t clear, the doctor may recommend a CT scan or an MRI scan.

When the fracture is complete and the bone is broken in two, the fractured limb is shorter than the healthy limb. If the leg seems to be turned to one side, there’s a good chance it has been fractured.

Intra-capsular fractures occur in the neck and femoral head. The other fractures that are below this area are called extra-capsular fractures.

Complications are common in intra-capsular fractures because there is less vascularization in the neck and femoral head region.

Interruptions in the blood flow after the fracture increase the risk of necrosis, degenerative changes, and impaired healing.

Surgical Treatment Of Femur Neck Fracture

  • Surgery provides the fastest recovery in cases of femur neck fractures. The sooner the surgery is performed, the sooner the healing process will begin. The patient will have to remain in bed rest for a short time and will be discharged early.
  •   Femoral neck fracture surgeries should ideally take place within 48 hours after the fracture has occurred, but the patient should be clinically stable for this to happen.
  •   During the procedure, bones are fixed using pins, plates, and screws. Artificial prosthesis may be used to replace parts of the hip to prevent blood perfusion.
  •   Patients will be asked to take short walks using crutches after the surgery to prevent atrophy. Patients will be asked to go through physical therapy as soon as possible so that they can walk again.
